The Bath spring school is now over, and this webpage is here just for reference. Some photos were posted after the event, and additional material (slides and posters) will be added to the program page.

Themes
The aim of the school is to review latest advances in the mathematical description of discrete (microscopic) systems arising in various contexts and their “continuum” limits, which typically consist of partial differential equations of transport/kinetic type. These continuum limits are used in models in social sciences (e. g. animal swarming, opinion formation, social behavior) and physics (the behavior of gases, aggregation phenomena, plasma physics, and the evolution of galaxies for example.) A major issue in the mathematical analysis of those models is the rigorous justification of the continuum limit as an approximation to the discrete one as the number of agents (or particles) becomes larger and larger. The main scope of the school is to provide a sound mathematical background, as well as a comprehensive review of newly developed techniques, in the study of such rigorous approximation procedures. The techniques used are often related to classical methods in particle physics and fluid mechanics, and the interplay between classical applications and modern ones is a major focus of the school.

There is some funding available to support postgraduate researchers. If you would like to apply for it, please specify this in your email and attach (or include a link to) your CV.
The deadline for registration is April 15, 2014. The deadline for applying for funding to attend the school was February 28, 2014. Decisions on funding have now been sent. If you applied for funding you should have already received an answer; please contact us if this is not the case.
There will also be a poster session as part of the school. If you would like to submit a poster, please specify so when you submit your registration. There are further details regarding the poster session here.
Posters should be printed on an A1 or A0 size paper. We also request that you send us a title an abstract before April 30, 2014.
